OUR ETHOS

Midnight Rose Design Studio is a 'planet before profit' business.

We are always striving to improve, and look forward to implementing more and more sustainable practices as the years progress whilst building a happy community!

Learn a little more about our current practices, and why these are central to Midnight Rose below...

A closeup of a purple foxglove flower fills the photo. There are rain drops on the petals and a bee can be seen sitting in one of the flowers.

Our current practice

We use biodegradable/ compostable materials where this is possible, including our care cards, and choose to work with British seasonal flowers throughout the year*.

All event work is created without the use of Floral foam (Oasis).

The small amount of flowers we grow are done so with thought for the world around us, planting beneficiary plants for pollinators, and using organic principles whenever possible. I do not spray harmful chemicals on my flowers to prevent pests, supporting the ecosystem as best as possible, protecting our wildlife and much needed pollinators.

Why British?

Majority of the flowers used at Midnight Rose are sourced from trusted British growers, and where possible within a few miles of the studio for many reasons*:

  • The freshness is unmatched:

Importing flowers requires airmiles meaning the blooms are ultimately out of water for longer, wrapped in plastic, and require additional conditioning time/ labour.

  • The variety of flowers/ foliage available via smaller growers is incredible, and the scent is something else!

Imported flowers can require sprays and dips to keep them fresh. It is more difficult for a florist to know what has been used, and moreover, in what dosage. Studies have been conducted into a lack of data regarding this, and the potential hazards for florists, and although I can never have 100% control over any blooms bought in; that growers will never use sprays, sourcing British/ locally grown reduces the number of stems treated with heavy chemicals, reducing the risk as much as I can.

*Farewell (funeral) flowers are currently the only exception I will make to buying solely British, although British sourced arrangements are always encouraged wherever possible.

"...According to the results of the risk assessment, Belgian florists who handle a large number of flowers are at risk of exposure to pesticides residues with potential effects on their health." (Toumi, K, Joly, L, Vleminckx, C et al, 2017).

A single lilac rose can be seen, with dark glossy green leaves in the background and a small amount of patio below the bush.
  • Environmental impact:

British grown flowers naturally have a lower carbon footprint, and many locally grown blooms are grown with no pesticide use, including 100% of Midnight Rose home grown blooms, supporting the natural ecosystem.

  • Community:

Supporting local businesses supports and boosts local infrastructure & economy.

Shopping local also builds a sense of community which I believe helps people feel connection and belonging to the place they call home.

We do local giveaways & occasionally, are able to offer Random acts of Kindness flowers in the local community (Follow our social media for all updates).

  • Charity:

£1 from most purchases is donated to charity**. Each season, I select a charity to support and currently am supporting 'Greenfingers Charity' who design gardens for Children's hospices across the UK for the children and their families to use.

**Orders £15 & under are currently exempt from this, but I will continue to review.
